Several years ago I taught at a school where we were always using the Venn diagram and one day I thought, "There is more to life than the Venn diagram!" We were Venn diagraming everything under the sun every day! However, after many years of teaching the primary grades, I often find myself thinking in terms of the Venn diagram especially as an expat living in Mexico. I find myself instinctually noting similarities and differences between the US and Mexico.
Which brings me to today´s topic which is the similarity of how the US and Mexico are organized. They are both federal republics organized into states. The official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos which translates to United Mexican States.
Let us dive into looking at the 32 states of Mexico.
Mexico is divided into 31 states, "estados" in Spanish, and 1 federal district, " distrito federal" in Spanish. Mexico City is the capital of the country and located in the federal district. It can be be considered the 32nd state of Mexico but technically is the federal seat of the nation much like Washington, DC is to the United States.
Here is a map of Mexico divided into each state.

Each state has its own governor, state constitution and is divided into municipalities. The municipalities are governed by a mayor.
Each state is uniquely different in geography, biomes, resources, history, traditions, culture, food, and customs. There is so much to explore and learn in Mexico. Where does one begin?
My journey began in Mexico City years ago. I have since explored places in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Estado de Mexico, Puebla, Morelos, Baja California and Jalisco. There are so many other places to visit and learn about and will continue to do so. So keep posted!
